Soldier Field was designed in the neoclassical style and opened on Chicago?s near South Side near Lake Michigan in 1924. Throughout its history, it?s hosted a number of sporting events, concerts, rallies, and speeches. In 1971, the Chicago Bears left Wrigley Field and made Soldier Field their permanent home after the AFL-NFL merger required stadium capacities seat at least 50,000 and include lighting for night games. In 2001, the Chicago Park District, which owns the stadium, announced plans to improve the aging and cramped facility by demolishing and reconstructing the interior while preserving the exterior. While the innovative design allowed for enhanced amenities, increased seating capacity, and improved accessibility for fans, many preservationists, architecture critics and residents were not thrilled about the renovation as the modern glass and steel structure was seen as incongruous with the stadium?s neoclassical origins. Debates about the design of the stadium continue today. 2
